Scottie Dog Purse by Linda Beeson

Linda made this adorable Scottie Dog Purse.  Linda used a variety of products, but my favorite is the Extreme Glitter Paint!  (Click on the image to see a larger view and get a closer look at the project).  I think any girl (little or big) would love a gift purse like this!

PLAID project week: Herb Cutting Gift Box

Day 6 of PLAID Project Week:  Each day we are doing a drawing for a Mod Podge Gift Pack (read more about that here).  Each day has a challenge or question that qualifies you for the daily drawing.  For TODAY:  Mod Podge is celebrating 40 years.  Tell us your earliest memory of using Mod Podge.  Was it in school? doing crafts with Mom? Girl Scouts?  If you've never used Mod Podge (gasp!) tell us that too. 

Today's project is an Herb Cutting Gift Box created by Kristie Larsen:

I first started with collecting my supplies: the Mod Podge Professional Tool Set, that includes a Mod Podge brayer and smoother sold together as a set. I also purchased a wood box from my local craft store. It has cute handles and is about 5 inches tall. I also selected the paper that I wanted to cover my box with. I chose a kraft color with flowers so the wood sides would match, thus eliminating the need to cover or paint the sides. (which you will see at the end)

 

I first covered the front of the box with some Mod Podge Gloss Lustre using a foam brush.

 

I then layed down the paper positioning it exactly where i wanted my flowers to show on the box. I used the brayer to smooth out the paper to be sure air bubbles were flattened. After which I took the smoother and went over the edges creating a bit of a crease/outline so I could tell where the box ended. I loved using both of these tools. I LOVE using Mod Podge and up until now have never had tools to smooth out air bubbles and such and in turn have always had a problem with them! I definitely feel these tools are valuable to have in your craft stash and I know I will be using them again and again.

 

I then flipped over the paper and cut around the box with a sharp exacto knife.

You can see what it looked like right after cutting without the handle cut.

 

I then went back and cut the handle out as well. It is EXTREMELY important to have a brand new knife blade for the quickest and cleanest cuts. You will thank yourself later ; ) Note the wood sides. They don't clash too  much with the paper so I left them bare. It makes putting this gift together quick and fun.

I then took to my garden where my herbs are growing like crazy! I took some clippings of Rosemary and Thyme and wrapped them in some burlap fabric.

I made up a special tag using some Pink Persimmon stamps (Vintage Greetings and Ric Rac Circle), a scallop and a regular circle die cut and a scallop punch for the flower. I crinkled the flower and cut a slit down each scallop to help make my petals. I added a button and twine to finish it off. This is a great summer gift for any herb loving chef in your life!

PLAID Project Week: Flower & Bee Frame

This Flower & Bee Frame by Kelly Schirmer. 

Kelly used Folk Art Paint in Sea Mist, Lemonade, Barnyard Red, and Spanish Olive.  The frame was in the clearance bin at Michael's for $1.50 (plain wood).  The stamp sets she used are Ric Rac Circle for sentiment and flower, and open ric rac strip from Banners set (small).  She also used Brilliance Black ink, and Papertrey Ink's Fresh Snow pigment ink.

Step #1:
Purchased plain wooden frame from Michael's.  Painted leaves using Plaid's Spanish Olive Folk Art Paint.

Step #2:  Painted Flower using Plaid's Barnyard Red Folk Art Paint.  Once dry, I stamped Ric Rac Circle using PTI's Fresh Snow ink.  Added picture to frame.  That is my great nephew Owen!

Step #3 :  Painted Bee with Plaid's Lemonade Folk Art paint.  Once dry, I stamped the "open" ric rac strip from Banners set (small).  Cut and embossed 2 ovals from vellum paper using Spellbinders "Petite Ovals Small", and used the smallest oval in the set.  Attached to the back of bee with glue dots.  Added 2 black Kaiser Kraft rhinestones for the eyes.

Step #4:  Painted base with Plaid's Seamist Folk Art Paint.  Punched circle with 7/8 circle punch, and added red eyelet.  Stamped "for you" sentiment from Ric Rac Circle set.  Tied to base with hemp twine.


Kelly's "Pros" about the Folk Art Paint:
-thick paint but really smooth finish
-great coverage, only needed to do a touch up after 1 coat for only the darker colors; have plenty left to do more projects, so very cost effective.
-wide range of colors to choose from.
-colors true to swatch on the label.
-dries quickly.
-flip-top cap for no mess!
-no paint odor!
 
I can't think of "Cons" about the paint, I loved it!

Halloween Magnets by Julie Detlef

We have a really fun project to feature today, created by Julie Detlef.  Julie tested the Mod Podge Dimensional Magic for her project and created these adorable refrigerator magnets just in time for Halloween with our new Vintage Pumpkin Stamp Set.  

Here's what Julie had to say about the Dimensional Magic: " I had the pleasure of using Plaid’s Mod Podge Dimensional Magic and Pink Persimmon stamps to create fun pumpkin magnets.  The Dimensional Magic was so fun and easy to work with.  It completely forms to the item you are adhering it to.  These magnets are easy to create.  They do require some fussy cutting, but they are well worth the time."

 

Julie shares her step-by-step instructions for these little magnets:

Step 1.  Stamp the pumpkins on light yellow cardstock as well as various fall colored pattern papers.  Stamp the accessories such as the hats, boots, and bow ties onto grey pattern paper as well.  I used the yellow cardstock as the base of the pumpkin.

Step 2. Cut out the pumpkins that were stamped on the yellow paper.  Then cut out the pumpkins that were stamped on the pattern paper.  Use an exacto knife to cut out the eyes nose, and brows of the pumpkins.

Step 3. Adhere the pattern paper over the light yellow cardstock pumpkin.  The eyes should show through giving the pumpkin some dimension.  If you are adding an accessory cut this out and attach as well.

Step 4. Put this pumpkin on a self adhesive sheet of magnet as shown.  Trim around the pumpkin.

Step 5. As a final step apply the Dimensional Magic directly to the pumpkin magnet.  The Magic conforms perfectly to the shape.  

 It works wonderfully.  I love the dimension and gloss it gives to the stamped images. You'll see in the finished images how the Dimensional Magic settles in where the paper cutouts are, giving the pumpkin some character.  Leave sit for a day and they are ready to play with.

My daughters loved these magnets.  Right away they were calling dibs on them.

Some tips:If a bubble appears while you are applying the Dimensional Magic take a pin and pop it.  You won’t even notice it was ever there. The Dimensional Magic is an absolutely wonderful product.  I don’t have any cons to say at all about it.  I will definitely be using this more in the future.

Stenciled Gift Bag by Kristie Larsen

Today Kristie Larsen shows us how to use the Simply Stencils Value Pack - Cats & Dogs to decorate a bag and coordinate the tissue paper to make a special gift bag. 

 

I started by gathering my supplies. I picked up a kraft gift bag, a stipple paint brush and some craft paints in little pots so I could choose from a variety of colors.

I started by painting the large dog image with a dark brown paint.

 

Once that was complete I went over it again with a light brown but only lightly stippling it so it would resemble fur. Then I added in some blue for the eyes.

I next did two colors of green for the grass. I started with a light yellowish green and then moved the stencil down a bit to add a darker lime onto the top.

 

Here is the completed stencil. Very cute! I also added a Pink Persimmon stamped birthday sentiment (that you will see later).

 

Next I decided to stamp some tissue paper which is always a must for a gift bag! I used the large bone stencil and sponged it with grey ink.

 

Then using the Pink Persimmon "Bow-Wow" sentiment (from Little Red Wagon) I stamped around the bones using blue and chartreuse ink.

 

You can see how easy and quick this project was, and how much you can spruce up a gift bag in no time flat!

 

Here is a close up of the tissue paper: I think stenciling is quick and fun and can be used in so many great ways. There are many more stencils images that came with this Plaid set. The possibilities of projects are endless! Happy Crafting!

Halloween Treat Bag by Samantha Sibbet

Samantha Sibbet made a sweet Halloween Treat Bag and gave her pumpkin embellishment a simple treatment with the Mod Podge Dimensional Magic.

 

Sam's review of Dimensional Magic:
"The Dimensional Magic was the perfect product for me to add a little bit of texture to my project.  I like its glossy clear finish and I also like the way my glitter will stay put in it when I use it as a glitter adhesive.  The liquid comes out of the tip quite easily and even after a few days it still has not clogged up.  The cap is unique, it may be the secret to keeping the liquid flowing freely from the tip.  when working on paper, I liked the way that the Dimensional Magic stayed exactly where I put it.  It didn't move around the design unless I tilted the paper sideways or if I pushed it around with the tip of the bottle.  Plaid suggested it would take up to 3 hours for projects to dry and I found that for my use it was drying in half that time. I also discovered that it will dry even faster if you place your project in front of a fan.  I think this is a great product to add some shine to my work and I love it with glitter.  I will definitely be using it on future crafts."

Supplies used:

PLAID Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
Memento Ink
Pop dots
2x3 BINGO  card
Mini alpha stickers
fabric
border punch
floss
markers
glitter
lunch sack

Stamp pumpkin and hat.  Color with markers.

When ink is dry apply PLAID Mod Podge Dimensional Magic to pumpkin and hat.
 

Generously sprinkle glitter and set aside to dry for 2 hours.

Trim fabric 1/2 inch larger than Bingo card.  Fray all the sides and glue fabric to back of card.
 

Apply HALLOWEEN Stickers to the bottom of the bingo card

Poke holes with your needle in card and embroider a total of 4 x's.

Use the border punch on the top of the lunch sack.

Cut out the hat and pumpkin and adhere to card with pop dots.

Glue card to sack and fill with yummy treats!

 

Looks like Samantha has two little goblins in her house that like this Treat Bag!  Samantha's daughters are often the inspiration for many of her projects.  So cute!

Herb Garden Gift by Kristie Larsen

Today's project was using the foam 'Simply Stamps Alphabet'. My herb garden is growing like gangbusters and a friend is having a birthday so I thought a nice cutting of some herb plants would make a great gift. I picked up some small terracotta pots at my local craft store.

 

Using some hybrid ink and the Plaid Simply Stamps Alphabet, I stamped the names of the herbs right on the pot. You have to be a bit careful to roll the stamp on to be sure you get the entire image stamped evenly. These stamps are a fun size but a bit difficult to manage since they are mounted on a thin piece of stiff plastic. They get great ink coverage and stamp really well.

 

I finished off my two pots. One with Thyme and one with Rosemary.

Then it was time for potting! Using a trowel I cut out some of my thyme plant and repotted it in is new home!

I made up a tag and card for my friend using Pink Persimmon stamps. I overlayed my stamped images and offset it for some visual interest. I used rectangle die cuts and added an eyelet and twine to finish off the look. The sentiments are from Vintage Greetings and the flower images are from the Flower Garden stamp sets. 

 

I paired the card with the tag by using the same colors, scallops and wood-grain impression. I simply changed the sentiment and stamped more flowers for my focal point.

Together you can see what a great gift it is. One that is simple to make but keeps on giving!
